About Unsetting Expectations

Unsetting Expectations is a new publication, catered for all of you high-performing, high-achieving, workaholic, perfectionist individuals grappling with issues of never feeling satisfied, always working crazy long hours, and not feeling proud of their accomplishments. It's written and edited by me, Franka Grubisic.

If you are all of the above + if you are intrinsically motivated to work, enjoy doing what you do so much that you end up working in all times of day and night, passionate about what you're doing and the change and impact you're making, if your work defines you - this newsletter is for you.

Whether we want to admit it to ourselves or not, the moment of feeling sick to our stomachs is coming. The burnout. No matter how much we are in love with what we do, if we don't take care of ourselves, it's not going to end well. But, for someone who hasn't stopped working for 11.5 years, working for 16+ hours a day - literally not having a day off - and who expects high things of oneself, slowing down is a hard thing to do.

But that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 12 months, as well as uncovering situations faced throughout my life that contributed to this workaholism, and I want to share my learnings with you, through personal stories and lessons.

Unsetting Expectations will land in your inbox every two weeks on a Thursday. If you're new here, don't worry, you’ll also have access to all the issue archives online via this website 😊

You won't find any gimmicky, click-baity or pseudo-advice here; just simple, honest and raw thoughts and advice on unsetting expectations to help you feel less alone, learn to be more gentle on yourself and quiet down your inner, perfectionist critic. You'll learn how to unset expectations.

If you are willing, you can support me in the writings of this newsletter by buying me a doughnut 🍩. Why a doughnut, you may ask? Well, in my native language, 'doughnut' is spelled: 'krafna', which makes it an anagram of my name; Franka. And if there was such a thing as a power animal, but for food, I'd be a doughnut.

About Franka

Hello, I'm Franka, a Croatian woman studying at Stockholm University and dreaming of a life in Sydney — but also a 5-times award-winning geospatial professional, excellence scholar with 3 scholarships, an entrepreneur... Honestly, the list goes on.

Even though I was a lot of things throughout my career - a surveyor, user experience researcher, geospatial analyst, software developer, project manager, service designer,... (another list that goes on), there was one thing that never changed. I was a workaholic.

I've been working since I was little, and my chronic workaholism almost killed me. This time last year, I've stopped working and committed to designing a life that works for me instead. What you read here is my roadmap to that life - and I hope you enjoy 🙂

Note

All of my writing is published unedited, & for a reason. I want you to experience my exact, raw thought process as this ensures that you get the most open, true & honest version of me at all times.
